History

Seven men met in Holtwood, Pennsylvania on a January evening in 1947 to organize a Lions Club. These seven men, David Eshbach, Dr. G.W. Hess, Arthur Shaub, David Eshbach, Jr., Enos Hill, Ernest Shuleen, and Leroy Hilton started a Lions Club that has been active since its charter was granted in April of 1947. They named their new baby the Tucquan Lions Club, with Quarryville being the sponsoring organization. The men who started the Tucquan Lions Club were from Conestoga, Safe Harbor, Marticville, Pequea, Holtwood, The Buck, Rawlinsville, and points in between. Since no one place was home to a majority of these men, they decided to choose a name that was neutral. TUCQUAN was the name chosen. Tucquan is a creek, a glen, a hollow that cuts through the river hills to the Susquehanna River. The name is derived from an Indian word of the Lenni or Delaware Tribe.
